Only One Life

In the past week and a half, I’ve heard from friends about two car accidents that killed a total of five people. Both accidents involved alcohol, and in both cases, lives were lost. I knew two of the people personally and I’m sure they didn’t enter into the car that fateful night expecting it to be their last here on earth. Now their lives are over, and nothing can be changed about the choices that were made here on earth.

It’s the same with us, our lives could be over at any minute, and the choices we make now cannot be reversed.

In the light of these two tragic events, I wanted to share this writing from a great missionary in the past, C.T. Studd.

Only One Life
By C.T. Studd (1860-1931)

Two little lines I heard one day, Traveling along life’s busy way;
Bringing conviction to my heart, And from my mind would not depart;
Only one life, ’twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Only one life, yes only one, Soon will its fleeting hours be done;
Then, in ‘that day’ my Lord to meet, And stand before His Judgment seat;
Only one life,’ twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Only one life, the still small voice, Gently pleads for a better choice
Bidding me selfish aims to leave, And to God’s holy will to cleave;
Only one life, ’twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Only one life, a few brief years, Each with its burdens, hopes, and fears;
Each with its days I must fulfill, living for self or in His will;
Only one life, ’twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.

When this bright world would tempt me sore, When Satan would a victory score;
When self would seek to have its way, Then help me Lord with joy to say;
Only one life, ’twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Give me Father, a purpose deep, In joy or sorrow Thy word to keep;
Faithful and true what e’er the strife, Pleasing Thee in my daily life;
Only one life, ’twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Oh let my love with fervor burn, And from the world now let me turn;
Living for Thee, and Thee alone, Bringing Thee pleasure on Thy throne;
Only one life, “twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Only one life, yes only one, Now let me say, “Thy will be done”;
And when at last I’ll hear the call, I know I’ll say ’twas worth it all”;
Only one life,’ twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.

How true are these words from C.T. Studd! You will make countless decisions on how you’ll spend your days here on earth, in light of this reality, remember, “Only one life, ’twill soon pass, Only what’s done for Christ will last.”

Ask yourself this question, if your life were to end today, would Christ be glorified by the life and memories you left behind? May we live in such a way that exalts and lifts high the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, Jesus Christ. It’s for His glory and His renown!

    Hi Krame –
    As always, I was very blessed by your blog. The quote from C.T.Studd brought back many childhood memories, My mom had a plaque on the wall with that quote on it. I saw it daily and have never forgotten it. They are only a few words, but their truth is so profound! Something to consider daily, especially when we first arise! Love, Nanny
